In between · the ride
The simplest way to sandboard in Peru is a buggy evening at Huacachina, the oasis 5 km west of Ica. This tour collects you from your hotel in Huacachina or Ica, drives 20 minutes to the dunes and then spends 2.5 hours on the sand with photo stops, sandboarding, dune bashing, off-road driving and the sunset.
The boards are ridden lying on your belly or sitting, so there is nothing to learn before your opening run. PromPeru describes the dunes here as reaching up to 100 m, and the tourism ministry, MINCETUR, lists sandboarding among the activities at the lagoon.
At the end a car takes you to 4 drop-off points: Ica, the Cruz del Sur bus terminal, the oasis or the operator's office. That makes it easy to fit Huacachina sandboarding between a bus arrival and dinner, or before a night bus onward.
Why this tour
This tour puts you on the Huacachina sand for 2.5 hours of dune bashing, board runs, photo stops and the sunset, with a board for each traveler ridden on the belly or sitting, photos and videos and a sand bandana. It lasts 2 to 3 hours with hotel pickup, has 543 reviews and starts from $23.

In between · the dune coast
Huacachina is the classic, yet Peru has other dunes too. MINCETUR's tourism inventory names sandboarding at Cerro Blanco near Nasca, a dune with a steep face 700 m high, and at Toro Mata in the Arequipa region, recorded as a descent of 1,800 m for experts.
The north has dunes too: Medano Blanco in the Sechura Desert, the Manchan field near Casma and the Huamanchacate dunes by Coishco. Closer to the capital, a sandboarding day south of Lima hands out snowboards, boots and bindings at Punta Hermosa.
Our guides cover each of them, with access, prices and who they suit. For a first ride, though, the oasis beside Ica is hard to beat: it is about 4 hours from Lima by road, with a wide choice of tours and boards for rent at the lagoon.

We loved this. Our driver made us feel safe and still gave us plenty of fun, we rode several slopes, and the sunset view with a beer was a lovely extra.”

As a family with children we all enjoyed it: beautiful desert, great fun on the buggy and boards, a kind driver, and boards waxed before every run.”

The tour was amazing. We stopped several times to sandboard, and driving through the dunes is a memory that will stay with me.”

Wild! Our driver went really fast and I would have paid for the buggy alone. The slopes kept getting bigger, the guide was clear, and the sunset by the fire was stunning.”

Among our favorite things in South America: the scenery, the adventure, the crazy buggy and the boards. Our driver even took us back in the dark after a sunset beer on a dune.”

Honestly hilarious. The buggy was fast and funny but felt safe, our guide and driver made sure everyone had fun, and we ended up dancing by the bonfire.”
In between · in the reviews
Read the recent reviews and the same things come up. Travelers praise the drivers, who make the buggy ride fast and fun while still feeling safe, and they mention several slopes to ride, with the boards waxed before each descent.
The sunset gets as much praise as the riding. Guests describe watching it from the top of a dune with a drink and, on some evenings, a fire, and several reviewers count the evening among the highlights of their trip to Peru.
The organization comes up too: hotel pickup and drop-off in Ica as agreed, a guide who explained clearly what to do, and families with children who enjoyed it as much as the adults. On the listing, the sub-scores for the guide, the transport and the value all sit at 4.9.

View tourIn between · dry all year
The coastal desert is dry in every month. The weather station SENAMHI keeps at San Camilo, out in the Ica valley, logs a yearly mean of just 10.6 mm, and even January, its wettest month, sees only 5.1 mm. PromPeru gives the whole year as the season for sandboarding at Huacachina.
Temperature is what changes. The mean daily maximum peaks at 33.4 C in March and falls to 25.2 C in July, while nights drop from 17.8 C in January to 10.3 C in July. PromPeru's own pick is February and March, when it is warmer.
Whatever the month, the sunset session is the comfortable hour: the heat of the day has eased and the light turns the dunes gold. Bring a layer for the ride back in winter, and plenty of water in summer.

In between · a fair warning
Peru's tourism board, PromPeru, tells visitors to steer clear of dune buggy services for now: no one regulates them and no authority officially oversees them. This tour, like every sandboarding outing at Huacachina that we compare, uses a buggy to reach the slopes, and you should know that before you book.
The consumer authority INDECOPI has fined operators after accidents: two companies were fined 450 UIT each at first instance over safety failures on the Huacachina dunes after an event in May 2025. Ask about the driver, use the seat belt and speak up if the driving feels unsafe.
The listing sets its own limits too. It rules out pregnant women, anyone with back, heart, vertigo or breathing trouble, wheelchair users, riders over 130 kg and anyone just out of surgery. If any of that applies to you, enjoy the sunset from the top and let others ride.
Your sunset
Pick an evening, meet your driver at a hotel in Ica or the oasis, and drop out free of charge until the day before.
In between · booking terms
Change your mind until 24 hours before the start and every cent comes back; booking now with payment later is allowed too. On a route where buses and flights slip, that flexibility is worth having.
The price covers the pickup, the board, photos and videos and a sand bandana. It does not cover drinks and meals, insurance or the Huacachina conservation area tax, which the listing gives as PEN 8.00; PromPeru lists the entrance for foreign visitors at PEN 8.10.
A private group is available if your party would rather have a buggy of its own. Guests coming from Ica are asked to be ready 30 minutes before the pickup time, and the walk to the buggy parking takes 10 minutes.

In between · belly or standing
PromPeru names the ways down a dune as seated, flat on your front or upright, and says a hesitant rider may pair up with a friend on the board. This tour uses lying and sitting, and anyone can join in from the opening run.
Lying head first is the fast way down. Grip the nose of the board, tuck your elbows and drag your toes when you want to brake. Sitting is gentler, and a good choice for the steepest faces or if you are unsure.
If you want to learn to ride standing up, choose an outing with snowboards, boots and bindings instead. A 4-hour sandboard or sandski evening at Huacachina includes them with a certified instructor, and the dune days near Lima supply the same kind of gear.
Peru's giant dune
Cerro Blanco near Nasca has a steep face 700 m high.
MINCETUR's record describes a dune 6 km long and 3 km wide, with its summit at 2078 m, about 24 km east of Nasca. Riding it means a 4x4, a long climb and strong legs.
In between · what to wear
The listing asks you to wear comfortable clothing and to bring comfortable shoes, sports shoes, sunglasses, a sun hat, biodegradable sunscreen, clothing for the weather and a reusable water bottle. The sand bandana comes with the tour.
Light trousers protect your legs when you slide and fall, and long, light sleeves keep the sun off. PromPeru adds a windbreaker and cash to its list of essentials for the lagoon. Leave large bags behind: oversize luggage and large bags are not allowed.
Zip your phone away or leave the filming to the crew; photos and videos are included. Shake out your shoes before you get back in the car, and expect to find sand in your pockets for days.
The practical part
In between · languages
The tour runs with a driver who speaks Spanish and English. Ask your driver to repeat anything you did not catch; the dunes are no place to guess.
The meeting point is the operator's office next to the Wild Rover hostel, and pickup is available if you stay in Ica. Several drop-off points make it easy to move on afterwards, including the Cruz del Sur terminal.
If you prefer a lesson in English with a small group, the 4-hour snow-gear outing has an instructor in Spanish and English and a group of up to 10. For Huacachina sandboarding on a sled with the sunset, this tour keeps it simple.
Huacachina, beside Ica. Dunes up to 100 m, boards for rent and tours all year; Cerro Blanco asks for a long climb and Toro Mata is for experts.
Pickup, a board, photos and a bandana. Pickup from your hotel in Huacachina or Ica, sandboarding gear for each traveler, photos and videos and a sand bandana.
2 to 3 hours. 20 minutes by car each way and 2.5 hours at Huacachina.
Not with the gear it includes. The listing supplies sandboarding gear for riding on your belly or sitting.
Drinks, meals, insurance and the area tax. The listing gives the Huacachina conservation area tax as PEN 8.00.
Yes, in Huacachina or Ica. Guests from Ica should be ready 30 minutes before the pickup time.
PromPeru advises caution. It asks visitors to avoid buggy rides while the activity has no regulation or official oversight.
Pregnant women and some health conditions. Also people with back, heart or respiratory problems and people over 130 kg.
Yes, free up to 24 hours before. The money comes back in full, and you may book now and pay later.
Rain is rare, and plans can change for free. Rain is rare near Ica, at 10.6 mm a year, and dropping out stays free until the last 24 hours.
In between · beyond the oasis
Ica sandboarding does not end at the lagoon. PromPeru suggests walking the dunes at sunrise or sunset to see the light change the landscape, and a climb up a crest near the oasis is a good way to spend a morning.
Further south, Cerro Blanco rises about 24 km east of Nasca and is free to enter from 06:00 to 17:00. Nasca itself is about 2 hours from Ica by road, and a guided half day there includes transport, boards and a trekking guide.
To the north, the gate of the Paracas reserve sits 74 km from Ica's main square by road, with short buggy and board outings in the desert near the town. Our pages on each place set out what is there, how to get there and what it costs.

In between · honest caveats
This tour suits anyone who wants the thrill of the dunes without a lesson: friends, couples, families who meet the health limits, and travelers passing through Ica for a night. It has the most reviews of any buggy and sandboarding listing at Huacachina that we compare.
It is not the right choice if you want to learn to ride standing up; the boards it includes are for the belly or sitting. Nor is it for anyone the listing excludes on health grounds, and it is a buggy tour, which PromPeru advises against.
If you accept those points, it is a short, cheap and very well reviewed way onto some of Peru's best-known sand. Book a date, pack your sunglasses and keep your mouth shut on the steep drops.
