Every listing at Huacachina promises a buggy, a board and the sunset. Behind the same photos sit very different evenings, and a few questions sort them out before you pay.

Quick answer
A dune buggy in Huacachina is the vehicle that takes you into the sand, and the board is what you ride down it. The listings compared here sell both together, plus a stop for the sunset. PromPeru lists the ways down a dune as seated, face down or upright on the board, and notes that an unsure rider may go down with a partner.23
Which of those you get depends on the tour, and the titles do not always make it clear. The most reviewed listing calls its board session sandboard sledding and supplies gear for riding on the belly or sitting. Others hand you a snowboard or skis plus boots and bindings, with a certified instructor alongside.
Start by deciding which evening you want. If the thrill of the buggy and a fast slide head first is enough, a sledding tour is cheaper and needs no skill. If you want to learn to ride standing up, you need the outings with snow gear, and you should expect to pay about double.

The sledding side is led by a 2 to 3 hour buggy sightseeing tour with sandboard sledding and the sunset, with a 4.92 score from 543 reviewers and prices from $23. A 3.5-hour sunset ride with sand sledding starts from $24 and is rated 4.91 from 119 reviews.
The stand-up side costs more. A 4-hour sandboard or sandski outing with a bonfire starts from $48, rated 4.91 from 507 reviews, and a 4-hour version with drone videos and a 4x4 buggy starts from $47, rated 4.96 from 169 reviews. Viator also sells a sandboard and sandski school whose sessions last 3.25 hours, with up to 16 riders per group.
Watch for the small print in between. A 75-minute buggy and sandboarding outing warns that riding upright calls for a pro board, hired on top of the ticket. If a cheap listing shows riders standing in its photos, ask whether that board comes with the price before you book. A sled board and a snowboard with bindings are different tools, and an evening planned around one feels very different on the other.

Belly or sitting boards and the sunset, from $23.
Snowboards or skis, boots, bindings and a certified instructor.
The listing title names drone videos at sunset.
A 1-hour ride with a board, for groups of up to 10.
120 minutes of buggy and board after the islands.
If you are just starting out, choose slopes suited to your level and follow the instructor's directions.
Listed durations include driving and waiting, so compare the time at Huacachina, not the headline. Of the most reviewed tour's total, 2.5 hours are spent at Huacachina itself on dune bashing, board runs, off-road driving, photo stops and the sunset; a 20-minute car ride sits at either end.
Shorter tours trade time for price. A sunset buggy ride with sandboarding lasts 1 hour, starts from $17 and caps the group at 10. A Viator UTV buggy ride with sandboarding also lasts 1 hour, with a view of the oasis from the dune tops, a board session and photo stops; it is rated 4.97 from 254 reviews.
Longer tours build in a briefing. A 3.5-hour sunset ride begins with a 15-minute safety briefing at Huacachina, followed by 3 hours of guided touring, sandboarding and the sunset. That briefing is worth having: it is where you learn how the driver will brake, where to hold on and how to ride the board safely. On a tour without one, ask the driver for the same points before the buggy leaves the parking area, and make sure everyone in your group has heard them.

Peru's official tourism board, PromPeru, currently tells travelers to avoid dune buggy services, because nobody regulates them or officially supervises them.1 Every outing compared on this page reaches the slopes by buggy. You cannot avoid the issue by choosing a different listing; you can only reduce the risk.
The consumer authority INDECOPI has acted on it. After an event in May 2025, two companies were fined 450 UIT each at first instance over safety failures on the Huacachina dunes.5 In October 2026 a Nasca company and its manager were fined 455 UIT in all, also at first instance, after a buggy crash on the Usaka dunes that killed a foreign tourist and injured four.67 Police found that driver had no licence and no proof of fitness for the job.8
Ask the questions those cases raise. Does the operator use licensed drivers? On a 75-minute listing, only a certified driver takes the wheel. Are there seat belts and a briefing? Respect the health limits too: the most reviewed tour excludes pregnant women and anyone with back, heart, vertigo or breathing problems.
If you are staying in Ica or Huacachina, book locally. The most reviewed tour includes pickup from your hotel in either place and drops off at 4 points, among them the bus terminal of Cruz del Sur. Guests from Ica are asked to be ready 30 minutes before pickup.
From Lima, the buggy comes at the end of a very long day. A 16-hour day trip saves a 120-minute buggy and board session for after the Ballestas Islands and a vineyard, while an 18-hour trip includes 60 minutes only with its Premium option. Our Lima page compares those days with the dunes south of the capital.
A Nazca flight can share the day too. A trip from Ica or Huacachina flies over the Nazca Lines for 45 minutes and ends with 2 hours of dune bashing at Huacachina; it starts from $165. It is a long, full day, but it saves a night in Nasca if the lines are on your list.
A high average hides the detail, so read the breakdown. On the most reviewed tour the separate marks for guide, transport and value are 4.9 apiece. A large count matters as well: a score built on hundreds of reviews tells you more than a perfect score from a few dozen.
Then check what the price leaves out. The most reviewed tour excludes drinks and meals, insurance and the Huacachina conservation area tax, and foreign visitors pay PEN 8.10 to enter the lagoon area, PromPeru says.9 A cheap headline price can end up close to a mid-range one once those extras are paid.
Finally, check the cancellation terms. The listings compared here offer free cancellation up to 24 hours before, which helps on a trip where buses and flights slip. Our prices page lays out what each kind of Huacachina sandboarding tour costs and what you pay on top.
We recommend the 2 to 3 hour buggy tour with sand sledding and the sunset. It has the most reviews of any buggy and sandboarding listing at Huacachina on either platform, is rated 4.92 and starts from $23. It includes hotel pickup in Huacachina or Ica, a board for each traveler, photos and videos and a sand bandana.
Choose differently if you want to ride standing up. Then the 4-hour snow-gear outings, the drone-video version or the Viator school are the better fit, and the extra cost buys you boots, bindings and instruction. If you only have an hour, the short sunset rides do the job.
Whichever Huacachina sandboarding tour you pick, wear comfortable clothes, bring sunglasses, a sun hat and water, and arrive on time for the walk to the buggies, which takes 10 minutes on the most reviewed tour. Then hold on tight, keep your mouth shut on the steep drops and enjoy the sunset.
