Is sandboarding dangerous? Safety on Peru's dunes

Falling on sand is softer than falling on snow, but a fast run, a steep face and a buggy driven hard all add risk. Here is what the rules, the authorities and the listings say.

The board and the buggy carry different risks

Ask whether sandboarding is dangerous and you are really asking about two things. The board itself is a gravity ride down soft sand, which you can do sitting, lying down or standing.6 The buggy that carries you between dunes is a powerful vehicle driven fast over steep crests. The answers for the two are not the same.

On the board, what can go wrong mostly comes down to speed and technique: a twisted knee, a jarred wrist, a face full of sand. They are easy to reduce with a gentle start, the right position and protective gear. Watch the rider before you, wait until the slope below is clear and never stop in the run-out, where the next rider arrives at full speed. Lying down head first is fast; keep your elbows in and your toes ready to brake.

The buggy is where the official warnings point. PromPeru's advice is blunt: give dune buggy services a miss while nobody regulates or officially oversees them, and put your own safety ahead of the thrill.2 The buggy and board outings compared on this site all include a ride, and the choice of operator matters more than the choice of dune.

What Peru's rules say about sandboarding

Sandboarding is a recognized form of adventure tourism in Peru. A 2018 resolution of MINCETUR defined it as going down dunes or sand hills on special boards and set a minimum age of 8.1 The 2021 resolution that replaced it keeps sandboarding on the approved list.10

Being on the list brings duties for the travel agencies that offer it. Under the 2016 safety rules for adventure tourism, an agency providing the activity must carry a first aid kit and keep an equipment maintenance program.1112 It is fair to ask your operator whether it holds the regional authorization.

PromPeru's own advice points the same way: hire tour operators authorized by DIRCETUR, the regional tourism office, and ask for a receipt.7 A receipt with a company name is a small thing, but it is what lets you claim if something goes wrong, as the cases below show. Pay by card where you can, keep the booking confirmation on your phone and note the name of your driver and guide.

What happened when buggies went wrong

Peru's consumer authority INDECOPI has fined buggy operators. In October 2026 its Ica office fined a Nasca company and its manager 455 UIT in all, at first instance, after a crash on the Usaka dunes on 1 July 2025 that killed a foreign tourist and injured four other people.154

Police found that the driver had no license and no proof that he was fit for the activity.13 Two other companies were fined 450 UIT each, also at first instance, over safety failures on the dunes of Huacachina after a similar event in May 2025.3

These cases are not a reason to stay home, but they are a reason to choose with care. Look for a listing that names a certified driver; a 75-minute Huacachina outing promises that only a certified driver drives its buggy. Refuse a ride with no seat belt, and speak up if the driving scares you.

Is sandboarding difficult to learn?

Is sandboarding difficult? Not in its easiest form. PromPeru rates the riding at Huacachina beginner to intermediate, and a hesitant rider can share the board with a companion.1614 Lying on a board needs no lesson at all, only a firm grip and the nerve to let go.

Riding standing up is another matter. It needs a board with bindings, a feel for edges and a few falls before it clicks. PromPeru's advice to beginners is to pick slopes that suit your level and follow the instructor.8 On organized outings, an experienced instructor gives the instructions and the equipment.17

Pick the dune to match your level. The Huacachina dunes reach up to 100 m, Cerro Blanco has a face of 700 m and Toro Mata is recorded as a descent of 1,800 m for experts only.181920 Start small, stay in control and move up only when you can stop where you choose. Fatigue matters too: the last run of the day, after many climbs in loose sand, is the one where legs give way, so call it a day while you still feel strong.

The gear that keeps you in one piece

Protective gear is where listings differ most. The 4-hour sandboard or sandski outing near Huacachina includes a helmet, goggles and a bandana, along with snow boots, bindings and a certified instructor. It holds a 4.91 average over 507 reviews, with prices from $48.

Near Lima, the top-rated dune day includes snowboards, boots, bindings and a helmet, plus a first aid kit. The most reviewed sledding tour at Huacachina supplies a sand bandana and the board, but its list names no helmet. If you want one, ask before you book or bring your own.

Goggles matter more than they look. Wind lifts the sand, and a grain in the eye at speed is how small accidents start. Keep your mouth closed on steep runs, tuck long hair away and empty your pockets: a phone flying out halfway down a dune is easy to lose and hard to find.

Heat, sun and dehydration

The desert adds risks of its own. Near the Ica valley, SENAMHI's San Camilo records put the mean daytime high at 33.4 C in March, with February close behind at 33 C.5 The same station records just 10.6 mm of precipitation in a typical year, and there is no shade on the sand.21

For Huacachina, PromPeru's essentials list takes in sun protection, clothes you can walk in, hot-weather gear and a jacket against the wind.22 Climbing a dune in loose sand is hard work: drink before you are thirsty, rest in the shade of the buggy and take your sunglasses off only when you stop.

Evenings cool down fast. The mean daily minimum at the same station drops to 10.3 C in July, and sunset outings end after dark.9 A light layer for the ride back keeps you warm, and a head torch or phone light helps on the walk from the buggy.

Who should sit out the board or the buggy

Read the health list on any listing before you pay. The most reviewed sledding tour turns away pregnant women, people with back, heart, vertigo or breathing problems, wheelchair users, anyone over 130 kg and anyone recovering from surgery. The snow-gear outing adds epilepsy, pre-existing conditions, babies under 1 year and people over 70.

Age rules vary as well. MINCETUR's definition set a minimum age of 8 for sandboarding, and the Lima dune day accepts riders from 8 to 75.1 A guided climb of Cerro Blanco takes adults from 18 to 75 and asks for a moderate level of fitness.

If you are unsure, you can still enjoy the dunes. Watch the sunset from the top of a dune, take the photos and let the others ride. The sand will be there next time, and an evening on the crest above the lagoon is worth the trip on its own. Tell the guide early that you will watch rather than ride; there is usually a good spot near the buggy where you can follow every run.
